Bertschek, Irene, Wolfgang Briglauer, Kai Hüschelrath, Benedikt Kauf & Thomas Niebel (2016): The economic impacts of telecommunications networks and broadband internet. A survey. (ZEW discussion paper 2016-056), Mannheim, 48 S.

    Abstract

"We provide a structured overview of the quantitative literature on the economic impacts of telecommunications networks and broadband internet. Differentiating between wireline and wireless technologies as well as broadband availability and broadband adoption, respectively, we review studies investigating the impacts on economic growth, employment and regional development as well as productivity and firm performance. Eventually, the survey does not only allow the identification of main research gaps but also provides useful information for policy makers on the significance and importance of communication networks for social welfare."

    Steglich, Steffen;

    Zitatform

Steglich, Steffen (2016): Neue Formen der Zusammenarbeit - Die Kooperation in den digitalen und globalen Arbeitsräumen der IT-Branche. Erlangen, 264 S.

    Abstract

(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

    Abstract

The skill complementarity of broadband internet (2015)

    Abstract

"Does adoption of broadband internet in firms enhance labor productivity and increase wages? Is this technological change skill biased or factor neutral? We combine several Norwegian data sets to answer these questions. A public program with limited funding rolled out broadband access points and provides plausibly exogenous variation in the availability and adoption of broadband internet in firms. Our results suggest that broadband internet improves (worsens) the labor market outcomes and productivity of skilled (unskilled) workers. We explore several possible explanations for the skill complementarity of broadband internet. We find suggestive evidence that broadband adoption in firms complements skilled workers in executing nonroutine abstract tasks, and substitutes for unskilled workers in performing routine tasks. Taken together, our findings have important implications for the ongoing policy debate over government investment in broadband infrastructure to encourage productivity and wage growth." Zitatform

(2015): Mobiles und entgrenztes Arbeiten. Aktuelle Ergebnisse einer Betriebs- und Beschäftigtenbefragung. (Monitor), Berlin, 26 S.

    Abstract

Does rural broadband impact jobs and income?: evidence from spatial and first-differenced regressions (2014)

Whitacre, Brian, Roberto Gallardo & Sharon Strover (2014): Does rural broadband impact jobs and income? Evidence from spatial and first-differenced regressions. In: The annals of regional science, Jg. 53, H. 3, S. 649-670. DOI:10.1007/s00168-014-0637-x

    Abstract

"In order to better understand the association between broadband and jobs/income in non-metropolitan counties, this study conducts spatial and first differenced regressions using recent data from the Federal Communications Commission and the National Broadband Map. The relationships between broadband adoption/ availability and jobs/income in rural areas are analyzed after controlling for a host of potentially influential variables such as age, race, educational attainment, transportation infrastructure, and the presence of natural amenities. Results from spatial error models using 2011 data provide evidence that high levels of broadband adoption in non-metro counties are positively related to the number of firms and total employees in those counties. The first-differenced regressions use data from 2008 and 2011 to suggest that increases in broadband adoption levels are associated with increases in median household income and the percentage of non-farm proprietors in non-metro counties. Interestingly, simply obtaining increases in broadband availability (not adoption) over this time has no statistical impact on either jobs or income." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

The effects of broadband internet expansion on labor market outcomes (2013)

Atasoy, Hilal (2013): The effects of broadband internet expansion on labor market outcomes. In: ILR review, Jg. 66, H. 2, S. 315-345. DOI:10.1177/001979391306600202

    Abstract

"The author analyzes the effects of the expansion of broadband Internet access from 1999 to 2007 on labor market outcomes throughout the United States. Recent federal policy programs have allocated $18 billion toward subsidizing the spread of this technology, especially to rural areas. Understanding the interplay between technology, firms, and the labor market is important for evaluating whether additional scarce government resources should be allocated to improve this type of infrastructure. Using models that include county and time fixed effects, the author finds that gaining access to broadband services in a county is associated with approximately a 1.8 percentage point increase in the employment rate, with larger effects in rural and isolated areas. Most of the employment gains result from existing firms increasing the scale of their labor demand and from growth in the labor force. These results are consistent with a theoretical model in which broadband technology is complementary to skilled workers, with larger effects among college-educated workers and in industries and occupations that employ more college-educated workers.?" Productivity and broadband: the human factor (2013)

    Abstract

"While the productivity paradox has been largely resolved, debate persists about the impacts of information and communications technologies on productivity, particularly as regards broadband Internet connections. To date, the bulk of the literature has not addressed the impacts of broadband provision on regional variations in productivity. This study develops a series of spatial econometric models that examine the link between broadband provision and productivity for US counties. The models developed not only consider the link between productivity and broadband provision, but they also evaluate the variability in broadband impacts that are related to the quality of human capital stock within counties. The results of the models are evidence of skill-based technological change and suggest that in general, broadband has a positive impact on productivity only in locales with high levels of human capital and/or highly skilled occupations." The emergence of broadband internet and consequences for economic and social development (2011)

    Zitatform

Czernich, Nina (2011): The emergence of broadband internet and consequences for economic and social development. (ifo-Beiträge zur Wirtschaftsforschung 37), München, 111 S.

    Abstract

"The study addresses the question whether the emergence of broadband internet influences economic and social development. The results indicate that broadband internet indeed positively affects a number of economically and socially meaningful variables. To address concerns a reverse causality and omitted variables and to identify causal effects of broadband internet, different instrumental-variable models are employed. All instrumental-variable models have in common that they rest on features of the pre-existing communication networks, since modern broadband networks are built along these pre-existing networks." Abstract
