    Abstract

"Workers who enter the labor market during recessions experience lasting earnings losses, butthe role of non-pay amenities in exacerbating or counteracting these losses remains unknown.Using population-scale data from Germany, we find that labor market entry during recessionsgenerates a 5 percent reduction in earnings cumulated over the first decade of experience. 32 percent of recession-induced earnings losses are explained by losses in employer-specific pay.Implementing a revealed-preference estimator of employer quality that aggregates informationfrom the universe of worker moves across employers, we find that 14 percent of recession-inducedearnings losses are compensated by non-pay amenities." Abstract

"Field experiments show that employers are less likely to consider long-term unemployed job-seekers for interviews. We study the implications for optimal unemployment insurance (UI). Based on a structural model of job search and recruitment, estimated with German data, we analyze the optimal two-tier unemployment system. We find that screening makes the optimal initial benefit level four percentage points higher and the potential benefit duration seven months longer. Using an extended Baily-Chetty formula, we study the mechanisms through which screening affects the consumption smoothing gain and moral hazard cost of providing UI and highlight the role of the externality from endogenous firm behavior." Abstract

"We show that the widespread approach to estimate the career costs of motherhood – so called “child penalties” – is prone to produce biased results, as it pools first-time mothers of all ages without accounting for their differences in characteristics and outcomes. We propose a novel method building on the recent advances in the difference-in-differences literature to address this issue. Applied to German administrative data, our method yields 30 percent larger post-birth earnings losses than the conventional approach. We document meaningful effect heterogeneity by maternal age in both magnitude and interpretation, highlighting its key role in understanding the impact of motherhood." Muffert, Johanna & Regina T. Riphahn (2025): Long-Run Career Outcomes of Multiple Job Holding. (IZA discussion paper / Forschungsinstitut zur Zukunft der Arbeit 17605), Bonn, 57 S.

    Abstract

"Multiple job holding (MJH) is increasingly frequent in industrialized countries. Individuals holding a secondary job add to their experience, skills, and networks. We study the long-run labor market outcomes after MJH and investigate whether career effects can be validated. We employ high-quality administrative data from Germany. Our doubly robust estimation method combines entropy balancing with fixed effects difference-in-differences regressions. We find that income from primary employment declines after MJH spells and overall annual earnings from all jobs increase briefly. Job mobility increases after MJH spells. Interestingly, the beneficial long-term effects of MJH are largest for disadvantaged groups in the labor market such as females, those with low earnings, and low education. Overall, we find only limited benefits of MJH." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"This study analyzes how labor market frictions interact with firms’ decisions to reallocate workers across different occupations during labor market polarization. We compare the patterns of occupational reallocation within and across firms in the US and Germany in recent years. We find within-firm reallocation contributes significantly to the decline in employment in routine occupations in Germany, but much less so in the US. We construct a general equilibrium model of firm dynamics and find the model with different firing taxes can replicate the difference in firm-level adjustment patterns across these countries. We conduct two counterfactual experiments for each country, highlighting the different roles played by the within-firm cost of reorganizing the occupational mix and across-firm frictions created by firing taxes. The results suggest the latter plays a more significant role in labor market polarization. Higher firing costs would lead to greater and faster polarization in the US." Job Loss and Retirement (2025)

Nassal, Lea (2025): Job Loss and Retirement. (Warwick economic research papers 1565), Coventry, 61 S.

    Abstract

"This paper provides the first evidence of the long-term effects of job loss on age at retirement, pension benefits and lifetime income. Exploiting plant closures and using German administrative data, I compare displaced workers with similar non-displaced workers. I show that displaced workers delay their retirement in response to the shock and ineligibility for early pension claims is the main driver of this response. Despite adjustments in retirement behavior, displaced workers face significant losses in pension benefits and lifetime income. Compared to similar non-displaced workers, displaced workers experience losses in the present discounted value of their lifetime income of 25%." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"An influential thesis predicted in the 1990s that large cities would become polarised as both high-wage professional and low-wage service jobs expanded at the expense of middle-wage workers. We revisit this thesis by analysing change in the occupational class structure of the ten largest cities in Germany and the UK, 1991–2021. Using UK census and German social security data (SIAB), we find for all cities strong job growth at the top – among professionals and managers –, moderate growth at the bottom – among service and sales workers – and a sharp decline in the middle – among office clerks and production workers. The result is occupational class upgrading with a polarised twist. Polarised upgrading was particularly strong in London, but also evident in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester or Newcastle. German cities experienced similar levels of occupational upgrading, but less polarisation. Notably in Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart, job growth was heavily concentrated among professionals and managers. While second-tier cities such as Dortmund, Essen or Leipzig also created many professional jobs, they experienced almost as much growth in low-end jobs. We find no evidence that job polarisation is specific to the largest cities or that strong job growth among professionals is limited to a few winner-take-all cities such as London and Berlin." Abstract

(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

    Abstract

"Using German administrative data, we estimate the model using national industry wage premiums and their employment-weighted local averages as proxies for Industry-specific and aggregate local productivity shocks. Our analysis reveals strong outside option effects and limited variation in local monopsony power. Our parameter estimates indicate that a 1% increase in an industry’s productivity raises wages in that industry by approximately 0.47% while a 1% increase in average local labor market productivity raises all local wages by about 0.53% while 1% increase in productivity above the local labor market average increases employment share by 1.04%. A simulation of a 10% subsidy to the machinery sector demonstrates substantial wage spillovers varying from 0.01% to 1.2% and significant labor reallocation." (text excerpt, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Essays in labor economics and deep learning (2025)

    Zitatform

Rosa, Jan Ksawery (2025): Essays in labor economics and deep learning. Vancouver, 158 S. DOI:10.14288/1.0449634

    Abstract

"This dissertation comprises three self-contained chapters. Chapters 1 and 3 share a common theme: how firms interact within the same local labor market. Chapter 2 addresses the properties of neural network solutions of dynamic economic models. Chapter 1 examines how the expansion of large, multi-establishment (national) employers influences the wage and hiring policies of smaller, local firms. Using administrative data from Brazil covering firms’ and establishments’ data across different locations and occupations, I conduct a matched event study to assess how local employers respond to national employers’ large, idiosyncratic labor demand shifts. The findings reveal that during the expansion period, national employers increase wages in large cities by 8 percent, and they simultaneously raise wages by 5 percent and expand employment in other locations. This expansion pressures local employers in smaller locations to increase wages by 2 percent, resulting in a 1.5 percent wage growth for incumbent workers. Despite local employers reducing employment, workers are not adversely affected because they reallocate to national employers. In Chapter 2, we analyze the properties of deep learning approximations to dynamic structural models. We show that, due to their inherent inductive bias toward finding flat solutions to functional equations, such approximations can automatically satisfy long-run boundary conditions. This highlights the potential of deep learning to simplify the verification of an equilibrium’s long-term behavior in structural models. Additionally, the inductive bias provides a foundation for modeling forward-looking behavioral agents with self-consistent expectations. Chapter 3 develops a unified theoretical framework to quantify how heterogeneous firms in local labor markets respond to industry-level productivity shocks. We extend the standard monopsony model of Card et al. (2018) to a general-equilibrium setting, incorporating cross-employer spillovers that allow firms to adjust endogenously to shifts in workers’ outside options arising from productivity changes in other local industries. Using German administrative data, we estimate the model by employing national industry wage premiums as proxies for industry-specific productivity shocks. Our analysis reveals strong outside-option effects, a high degree of monopsony power, and relatively limited variation in that power level across commuting zones." Abstract

    Abstract

Abstract

"We study how artificial intelligence (AI) affects workers' earnings and employment stability, combining German job vacancy data with administrative records from 2017-2023. Identification comes from changes in workers' exposure to local AI skill demand over time, instrumented with national demand trends. We find no meaningful displacement or productivity effects on average, but notable skill heterogeneity: expert workers with deep domain knowledge gain while non-experts often lose, with returns shaped by occupational task structures. We also document AI-driven reinstatement effects toward analytic and interactive tasks that raise earnings. Overall, our results imply distributional concerns but also job-augmenting potential of early AI technologies." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
