Berufswahl

Was will ich werden?

    Abstract

"This article explores social selectivity in access to tertiary education in France and Germany in the period from 1980 to 2000. Results of multinomial logistic regression models show that access to different postsecondary institutions is characterized by marked social background effects in both countries. Depending on the type of tertiary institution we consider in France or Germany, social selectivity into fields of study is also observed. Overall, there is no indication for substantial changes in the pattern of inequality in access to tertiary education in either country during the past two decades." Marriage and career: the dynamic decisions of young men (2008)

    Abstract

"This paper examines the extent to which human capital and career decisions are affected by their potential returns in the marriage market. Although schooling and career decisions often are made before getting married, these decisions are likely to affect the future chances of receiving a marriage offer, the type of offer, and the probability of getting divorced. Therefore, I estimate a forward-looking model of the marriage and career decisions of young men between the ages of 16 and 39. The results show that if there were no returns to career choices in the marriage market, men would tend to work less, study less, and choose blue-collar jobs over white-collar jobs. These findings suggest that the existing literature underestimates the true returns to human capital investments by ignoring their returns in the marriage market." Accident risk, gender, family status and occupational choice in the UK (2008)

    Abstract

"Many studies show that women are more risk averse than men. In this paper, following DeLeire and Levy [Deleire T. and Levy H. (2004) 'Worker Sorting and the Risk of Death on the Job', Journal of Labor Economics, Vol. 22, No. 4, pp. 210-217.] for the US, we use family structure as a proxy for the degree of risk aversion to test the proposition that those with strong aversion to risk will make occupational choices biased towards safer jobs. In line with DeLeire and Levy we find that women are more risk averse than men and those that are single with children are more risk averse than those without. The effect on the degree of gender segregation is somewhat smaller than for the US." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Shaped by place: young people's decisions about education, training and work (2008)

    Abstract

"This article explores the ways in which young people's decisions about post-compulsory education, training and employment are shaped by place, drawing on case study evidence from three deprived neighbourhoods in England. It discusses the way in which place-based social networks and attachment to place influence individuals' outlooks and how they interpret and act on the opportunities they see. While such networks and place attachment can be a source of strength in facilitating access to opportunities, they can also be a source of weakness in acting to constrain individuals to familiar choices and locations. In this way, 'subjective' geographies of opportunity may be much more limited than 'objective' geographies of opportunity. Hence it is important for policy to recognise the importance of 'bounded horizons'." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"This article examines the importance of educational field of study, in addition to educational level, for explaining intergenerational class mobility in four countries: France, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands. Starting from standard models that only include educational level, we increase the complexity of the educational measure by differentiating between fields of study within levels. Contrary to our expectations, including field of study does not substantially reduce the partial effect of class origin on class destination. This seems to be due to the limited association between class origin and field choice, and between field choice and class destination. Implications for stratification and mobility studies are discussed." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Identity, parochial institutions, and occupational choice: linking the past to the present in the American Midwest (2008)

    Abstract

"This paper documents the presence of non-economic career motivations in the U.S. labor market, explores reasons why such motivations could arise, and provides an explanation for why they might have persisted across many generations. The analysis links ethnic (migrant) labor market networks in the American Midwest when it was first being settled, the local identity or attachment to place that emerged endogenously to maintain the integrity of these networks, and occupational choice today. While fractionalization may adversely affect the performance of secular institutions, ethnic competition in the labor market could at the same time have strengthened within-group loyalty and parochial institutions. These values and their complementary institutions, notably the church, could have mutually reinforced each other over many overlapping generations, long after the networks themselves had ceased to be salient. Counties with greater ethnic fractionalization in 1860 are indeed associated with steadily increasing participation in select religious denominations historically dominated by the migrants all the way through the twentieth century. Complementing this result, individuals born in high fractionalization counties are significantly less likely to select into geographically mobile professional occupations and, hence, to migrate out of their county of birth, despite the fact that these counties are indistinguishable from low fractionalization counties in terms of local public good provision and economic activity today." Abstract

"Economic debate about the consequences of immigration in the US has largely focused on how influxes of foreign-born labor with little educational attainment have affected similarly-educated native-born workers. Fewer studies analyze the effect of immigration within the market for highly-educated labor. We use O*NET data on job characteristics to assess whether native-born workers with graduate degrees respond to an increased presence of highly-educated foreign-born workers by choosing new occupations with different skill content. We find that immigrants with graduate degrees specialize in occupations demanding quantitative and analytical skills, whereas their native-born counterparts specialize in occupations requiring interactive and communication skills. When the foreign-born proportion of highlyeducated employment within an occupation rises, native employees with graduate degrees choose new occupations with less analytical and more communicative content. For completeness, we also assess whether immigration causes highlyeducated natives to lose their jobs or move across state boundaries. We find no evidence that either occurs." Who becomes an entrepreneur?: labor market prospects and occupational choice (2008)

    Poschke, Markus;

    Zitatform

Poschke, Markus (2008): Who becomes an entrepreneur? Labor market prospects and occupational choice. (IZA discussion paper 3816), Bonn, 37 S.

    Abstract

"Why do some people become entrepreneurs (and others don't)? Why are firms so heterogeneous, and many firms so small? To start, the paper briefly documents evidence from the empirical literature that the relationship between entrepreneurship and education is U-shaped, that many entrepreneurs start a firm 'out of necessity', that most firms are small, remain so, yet persist in the market, and that returns to entrepreneurship have a much larger cross-sectional variance than returns to wage work. Popular models of firm heterogeneity cannot easily account for the U-shape or for the persistence of low-productivity firms. The paper shows that these facts can be explained in a model of occupational choice between wage work and entrepreneurship where agents are heterogeneous in their ability as workers, and starting entrepreneurs face uncertainty about their project's productivity. Then, if agents' expected productivity as entrepreneurs is increasing and not too concave in their ability as workers, the most and the least able individuals choose to become entrepreneurs. This sorting is due to heterogeneous outside options in the labor market. Because of their low opportunity cost, low-ability agents benefit disproportionately from the ability to pursue only good business projects and abandon low-productivity ones. This also makes them more likely to immediately abandon a project for a new one. Data from the NLSY79 gives support to these two predictions. Individuals with relatively high or low wages when employed, or with a high or low degree, are more likely to be entrepreneurs or to become entrepreneurs, and spend more time in entrepreneurship. Among entrepreneurs, more of the firms run by individuals with low wages when employed, or with a low degree, are abandoned after only a year." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"As the largest public sector institution in the United Kingdom, education is a key site for studying the context of 'choice' and changes in the identities of professional workers in contemporary society. Recruitment and retention problems in education have led to the creation of new routes into teaching to attract career changers from other professions and occupations. In this paper we focus on career changers within the Economic and Social Research Council project 'Primary Teacher Identity, Commitment and Career in Performative School Cultures' who have entered teaching from other private sector occupations. We analyse these career changes in terms of 'turning points' in the participants' lives in order to assess the extent to which choices are 'self-initiated', 'forced' or 'structural'. We are interested in the basis on which these choices were made and the impact of gender on career decisions." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"Social cognitive career theory (SCCT) recognises the importance of individual differences and contextual influences in the career decision-making process. In extending the SCCT choice model, this study tested the role of personality, social supports, and the SCCT variables of self-efficacy, outcome expectations and goals in explaining the career readiness actions of career planning and exploration. The authors surveyed 414 Australian high school students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Career exploration was associated with goals and social supports, whereas career planning was associated with self-efficacy, goals, personality and an interaction term for goals and social support that indicated that levels of planning were highest when social support and goals were highest. Implications for parents, teachers and guidance counsellors as well as recommendations for future research directions are discussed." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"Despite increases in female labor force participation, women remain substantially under represented in most scientific and technical fields. The small number of women in engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science and other similar fields has variously been attributed to discrimination, differences in ability or choice. This paper uses a unique data set containing information on vocational interests to examine the determinants of entry in to Information Technology occupations. We show that men and women differ systematically in their interests, and that these differences can account for an economically and statistically large fraction of the occupational gender gap." Abstract

"This study applies choice experiments to the analysis of the relative importance of both monetary and non-monetary determinants of vocational choice and spatial labour supply. It identifies the determinants of individuals' choice of jobs and places of residence, and provides a better understanding of how rural labour adjustments might be managed in a country in transition. The results indicate that while wages are the most important factor influencing employment choice, other determinants affecting working conditions and residence do have a counterbalancing impact on choice. Results suggest that sample respondents do appear to be relatively immobile between sectors and also in terms of migration and commuting. However, our results do identify a range of non-wage determinants that might be used to stimulate mobility." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"This paper explores the impact of English language proficiency and country of origin on the occupational choice of high-skilled immigrants in the U.S. using the 2000 Census. The findings reveal that high-skilled immigrants with limited proficiency in English, or whose mother tongue is linguistically distant from English, are more likely to be in occupations in which English communication skills are not very important, such as computer and engineering occupations. Moreover, the degree of exposure to English prior to immigration is found to have little influence on selecting occupations in the U.S. The paper also shows that immigrants from some origins with little exposure to English and whose native language is far from English tend to be in some 'speaking-intensive' occupations, in particular social services occupations. These occupations may not require workers to be fluent in English if they mostly provide services to immigrants from their same linguistic background." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

"In this paper, we analyze investments in human capital in a way which is standard for financial assets, but not (yet) for human capital assets. We study mean-variance plots of human capital assets. We compare the properties of human capital returns using a performance measure and by using tests for mean-variance spanning. Fields differ strongly not only in common rates of return, but also in return per unit of risk. We identify a range of educations that are efficient in terms of investment goods, and a range of educations that may be chosen for consumption purposes." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

Abstract

"The rise in world trade since 1970 has raised international mobility of labor services. We study the effect of such a globalization of the world's labor markets. We find that when people can choose between wage work and managerial work, the output gains are U-shaped: A worldwide labor market raises output by more in the rich and the poor countries, and by less in the middle-income countries. This is because the middle-income countries experience the smallest change in the factor-price ratio, and where the option to choose between wage work and managerial work has the least value in the integrated economy. Our theory also establishes that after economic integration, the high skill countries see a disproportionate increase in managerial occupations. Using aggregate data on GDP, openness and occupations from 115 countries, we find evidence for these patterns of occupational choice." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"Employees' preferences about the types of jobs they want are of central importance both for theories of work motivation and for theories of personal well-being. Yet, we know little about whether there are significant differences between European countries in the strength of different preferences. This article uses representative data for five European countries with contrasting institutional regimes-Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, and Sweden. It compares the relative strength of intrinsic and extrinsic job preferences in these countries and then seeks to examine the usefulness of contrasting theoretical accounts to account for employees' job preference orientations. It finds little support for the view that either production or welfare regimes have a substantial effect on job preferences. Much of the difference between countries can be accounted for in terms of differences in workforce composition. There is, however, support for the view that the quality of jobs contributes to the salience of intrinsic job preferences and that variations between societies in the prevalence of good quality jobs help account for differences in motivational patterns." Abstract

"Standard economic models which focus on pecuniary payoffs cannot explain why there are highly able individuals who choose careers with low pecuniary returns. Therefore, financial incentives are unlikely to be effective in influencing career choices of these individuals. Based on Akerlof and Kranton (2000), we consider a model of career choice and identity where individuals derive non-pecuniary identity payoffs. Using factor analysis on a range of attitude questions, we find two factors related to identity (career orientation and social orientation), which are important for educational choices. The implication is that policymakers and institutions of higher education need to focus on identity related issues rather than just improved financial incentives if they aim at attracting the high ability youth to occupations with excess demand for labor." Abstract

"This paper tests a central implication of the theory of equalizing differences, that workers sort into jobs with different attributes based on their preferences for those attributes. We present evidence from four new time-use data sets for the United States and France on whether workers who are more gregarious, as revealed by their behavior when they are not working, tend to be employed in jobs that involve more social interactions. In each data set we find a significant and sizable relationship between the tendency to interact with others off the job and while working. People's descriptions of their jobs and their personalities also accord reasonably well with their time use on and off the job. Furthermore, workers in occupations that require social interactions according to the O'Net Dictionary of Occupational Titles tend to spend more of their non-working time with friends. Lastly, we find that workers report substantially higher levels of job satisfaction and net affect while at work if their jobs entail frequent interactions with coworkers and other desirable working conditions." Immigrant networks and their implications for occupational choice and wages (2007)

Patel, Krishna & Francis Vella (2007): Immigrant networks and their implications for occupational choice and wages. (IZA discussion paper 3217), Bonn, 49 S.

    Abstract

"This paper employs United States Census data to study the occupational allocation of immigrants. The data reveal that the occupational shares of various ethnic groups have grown drastically in regional labor markets over the period 1980 to 2000. We examine the extent to which this growth can be attributed to network effects. That is, we examine the relationship between the occupational choice decision of recently arrived immigrants with those of established immigrants from the same country. We also consider the earnings implications of these immigrant networks for recent arrivals. The empirical evidence strongly suggests the operation of networks in the immigrant labor market. First, we find evidence that new arrivals are locating in the same occupations as their countrymen. Moreover, this location decision is operating at the level of regional labor markets. Second, we find that individuals who locate in the 'popular' occupations of their countrymen enjoy a large and positive effect on their hourly wage and their level of weekly earnings." Abstract

"This study focused on examining the persistent aspects of career decision-making difficulties, using the Emotional and Personality-related Career decision-making Difficulties scale. The contribution of four personality measures- general indecisiveness, self-esteem, trait anxiety, and identity status-to the prediction of persistent career decision-making difficulties was tested on 747 students, using a longitudinal design. Results indicated that individuals with high EPCD scores at the beginning of the academic school year had less confidence in their choice and were less close to making a decision about the major into which they wanted to be admitted at the end of the year. The moderate correlations between the EPCD score and the four personality measures supported the validity of the EPCD. Implications for counseling and future research are discussed." Abstract

"In this paper, individual data from the Keio Household Panel Survey (KHPS) are used to investigate the effect of father's occupation and parents' years of schooling on the children's occupational choice in Japan. The estimation results indicate that children tend to choose the same occupation as their father with this being especially true for males. Parents' education does not affect children's occupational choice directly, but appears to have an indirect effect on children's occupational choice through children's education." Abstract

"A common justification for HOPE-style merit-aid programs is to promote and reward academic achievement, thereby inducing greater investments in human capital. However, grade-based eligibility and retention rules encourage other behavioral responses. Using data extracted from the longitudinal records of all undergraduates who enrolled at the University of Georgia (UGA) between 1989 and 1997, we estimate the effects of HOPE on college GPA, course selection, and major choice, treating non-residents as a control group. First, we find that HOPE increased resident freshman GPA by 0.13 point, while its effect on GPA after the first year is weak. Second, HOPE reduced the number of credit hours completed in math and science core curriculum courses during the first year, and this effect persisted into the second at roughly the same magnitude. Over both years, the estimated program effects imply that residents completed about 1.2 fewer math and sciences credit hours. Finally, the likel! ihood that the average resident freshman would choose to major in Education jumped 1.2 percentage points relative to their out-of-state counterparts after HOPE was introduced and the scholarship's influence on this decision was more pronounced for women and whites." Abstract

(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

    Abstract

"This article seeks to add to an understanding of why some men enter female-concentrated occupations (and why the majority do not). Drawing on the results of in-depth interviews with 27 men in a range of occupations, I illustrate and interpret the complex and often contradictory ways in which men approach the notion of working in female-concentrated occupations and examine the impact that this has on their occupational outcomes. The data suggest that different attitudes to female-concentrated work cannot in themselves explain men's presence there. Consequently I explore, with particular reference to social class, the context in which attitudes around gender, work and occupational destinations, are framed. I conclude that men's entry to female-concentrated occupations may best be approached, not as an issue of 'masculinity' but as one of social mobility operating within a gendered labour market." Abstract

(IAB)

    Abstract

(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

    Abstract

Abstract

(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

    Abstract

Abstract

(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

    Abstract

So besuchen Jugendliche in ländlichen Gemeinden eher berufsbildende Schulen. Abstract

"This paper investigates the impact of student support on educational choice (university versus non-university) and student performance in higher education, using data from the Netherlands. Over the years, the generosity of this support system has been substantially reduced. This paper considers the 1996-reform, which reduced the duration of public support by one year and limited it to the nominal duration of the study program. We investigate the effects of the reform, using micro data on freshmen from two cohorts: one before the change (1995) and one after the change (1997). We find that the reform drove 2.2% of the students from university to higher vocational education. We also find that performance improved after the reform. The probability of dropping out after 5 months fell by 2%, and university students completed 5% more courses. In addition, students spent relatively more time working on the side (3.7 hours per week on average) and less time studying (1.8 hours per week on average). This means that students probably became more efficient." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

Abstract

"This research sets out a Perceptual-Judgemental-Reinforcement approach to job choice under conditions of complexityand uncertainty. It investigates the claim that job choices are based on seven implicitfactors: such as the specific size of the occupation, the proportion of employees workingfull-time, the earnings, the job prospects, gender dominance in an occupation, the level of unemployment in the occupation and the predominant age group in the job. Nine casestudies involving choices from 25 randomly selected advertised jobs are presented. Results indicated substantial idiosyncrasy in jobchoices. An individual logistic regression analysis indicated no statistically significant influence of key labour market indicators in any of the nine case studies. It was concluded that job choice was idiosyncratic; that individuals lacked insight into their jobchoices and probably relied upon relatively few unstated cues. The findings have direct implications for the relevance of occupational information and for key issues in the delivery of vocational guidance." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"Analysing young people's educational choices, the authors derive and test implications of a relative risk aversion hypothesis: that educational choices are made so as to minimize the risk of ending up with a lower level of education than one's parents. These implications are in general different from what one would expect from human capital theory. They use a unique data set which combines data from administrative registers on young people's pathways through the educational system and their family background with survey data on their academic abilities at lower secondary school. The evidence is partly in favour of the relative risk aversion hypothesis." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

    Abstract

"This paper investigates the relationship between career choice and people's attitudes to-ward income, independence, risk, and work effort. Entrepreneurs are often described in terms of the strength or weakness of their attitudes in these dimensions. Conjoint analysis was used to determine the significance and nature of these attitudes in choosing one job over another. We also investigated the effect these attitudes have on the intention to start one's own business. Significant relationships were found between the utility expected from a job and the independence, risk, and income it offered. Similarly, the strength of intention to become self-employed was significantly related to the respondents' tolerance for risk and their preference for independence." Abstract

Abstract

"This article develops a supply-side mechanism about how cultural beliefs about gender differentially influence the early career-relevant decisions of men and women. Cultural beliefs about gender are argued to bias individuals' perceptions of their competence at various career-relevant tasks, controlling for actual ability. To the extent that individuals then act on gender-differentiated perceptions when making career decisions, cultural beliefs about gender channel men and women in substantially different career directions. The hypotheses are evaluated by considering how gendered beliefs about mathematics impact individuals' assessments of their own mathematical competence, which, in turn, leads to gender differences in decisions to persist on a path toward a career in science, math, or engineering." The impact of mothers' occupations on children's occupational destinations (1997)

    Zitatform

Khazzoom, Aziza (1997): The impact of mothers' occupations on children's occupational destinations. In: Research in Social Stratification and Mobility, Jg. 15, S. 57-89.

    Abstract

"This study demonstrates that mothers' occupations are crucial to mobility analyses, even Chose limited to men. Knowing mother's occupation not only substantially increases our ability to predict occupations for both genders, it also equalizes predictive ability between genders. Two findings from the model that includes mother's occupation diverge from the findings of models that use father's occupation as the sole measure of social origins. First, when mother's occupation is included, levels of inheritance, or immobility, rise. Second, there appear to be strong gender differences in mobility Patterns. There is some evidence that the effect of mother's occupation on daughter's occupational attainment increases as father's occupation decreases in status. This suggests that not including mother's occupation in analyses of social mobility and status attainment not only misspecifies the process of women's occupational attainment, but does so to differing degrees, depending on the level of father's occupation." Changing patterns of sex segregated occupations throughout the life-course (1995)

Jacobs, Sheila C. (1995): Changing patterns of sex segregated occupations throughout the life-course. In: European Sociological Review, Jg. 11, H. 2, S. 157-171.

    Abstract

    Abstract

(IAB2)

Some factors affecting the occupational expectations of female adolescents (1993)

    Abstract

    Abstract

    Schoch, Jürgen;

    Zitatform

Schoch, Jürgen (1989): Warum wollen sie ins Heim? Warum arbeiten sie im Heim? Berufswahl- und Berufsmotive von ausgebildeten Heimerziehern. In: Soziale Arbeit, Jg. 38, H. 5, S. 175-181.
