Abstract
"We use de-identified data from Facebook to study the social integration of Syrian migrants in Germany, a country that received a large influx of refugees during the Syrian Civil War. We construct measures of migrants' social integration based on Syrians' friendship links to Germans, their use of the German language, and their participation in local social groups. We find large variation in Syrians' social integration across German counties, and use a movers' research design to document that these differences are largely due to causal effects of place. Regional differences in the social integration of Syrians are shaped both by the rate at which German natives befriend other locals in general (general friendliness) and the relative rate at which they befriend local Syrian migrants versus German natives (relative friending). We follow the friending behavior of Germans that move across locations to show that both general friendliness and relative friending are more strongly affected by place-based effects such as local institutions than by persistent individual characteristics of natives (e.g., attitudes toward neighbors or migrants). Relative friending is higher in areas with lower unemployment and more completed government-sponsored integration courses. Using variation in teacher availability as an instrument, we find that integration courses had a substantial causal effect on the social integration of Syrian migrants. We also use fluctuations in the presence of Syrian migrants across high school cohorts to show that natives with quasi-random expo-sure to Syrians in school are more likely to befriend other Syrian migrants in other settings, suggesting that contact between groups can shape subsequent attitudes towards migrants." Abstract
"This chapter explores the factors IAB that shape the intentions of Ukrainian refugees to invest in post-migration human capital in Germany. Guided by theory of post-migration human capital investments (IHCI) and using a vignette experiment among Ukrainian refugees within the online high frequency survey of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Refugee Survey we examine how human capital transferability, opportunity costs, and settlement intentions affect people’s willingness to invest in vocational training. Our findings suggest that refugees’ post-migration educational intentions generally align with the IHCI model: refugees weigh costs and expected benefits, taking into account the usability of qualifications over time. Alongside transferability of skills from abroad to Germany, the potential transferability of acquired skills in Germany to abroad play a significant role in people’s decisions, especially if refugees intend to stay in the host country only temporarily." Abstract
"Frontline workers in host-country state organizations influence refugees’ life chances and social integration. Yet little is known about how the local organizational environment shapes the action orientations of street-level bureaucrats (SLBs). This article explores how German job centers and placement officers have responded to the unprecedented increase in refugee clients following the winter of 2015/16. Our findings suggest that new organizational structures motivate SLBs to interpret rules flexibly and do what works well. This pattern of authorized rule bending is relevant for overcoming the limits of activation and for the inclusion/exclusion of refugees as mediated by state bureaucracy." Abstract
(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

Abstract
"This article examines how Ukrainian refugees experience wartime home visits. Relying on in-depth, repeated interviews with Ukrainian refugees in Germany, the article explores a state of in-betweenness that characterizes these individuals’ lives shortly after arrival, particularly by disrupting their sense of belonging and capacity to imagine the future. During short-term home visits to Ukraine, the visitors acquire a feel for life in war that is associated with complex feelings of alienation, disillusionment, and futurelessness. This experience helps individuals overcome subjective states of the in-between and move forward in life, irrespective of the persistent structural limbo related to temporary protection. Considering migrant home visits as transformative events advances recent debates about liminality and protracted displacement. It also has important implications for longer-term processes of social inclusion." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku, © Oxford University Press) ((en))

Abstract
(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

Abstract
"Out-migration is a central yet understudied dimension of migration processes, with important implications for labor supply, integration trajectories, and population composition. This paper examines how out-migration intentions vary across migrant groups and how economic ties, socio-cultural embeddedness, and transnational ties are associated with return and onward migration. Using recent data on immigrants in Germany, the analysis shows that out-migration intentions are shaped by multiple mechanisms rather than a single dominant factor. Socio-cultural embeddedness is the strongest correlate of lower mobility, whereas economic resources and transnational ties have more heterogeneous associations. Return and onward migration are linked to distinct configurations of attachments, and these patterns vary systematically by gender and migration motive. Men are more likely to report onward migration, and economic migrants exhibit higher overall mobility than family migrants and refugees. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between forms of mobility and moving beyond purely economic explanations to better understand migrant retention and mobility dynamics." Abstract
"This article examines whether refugee mothers in high-income countries can benefit from universal childcare services. Using a large, representative survey of Ukrainian refugees in Germany linked with administrative area-level information, we estimate the effects of childcare services on mothers’ participation in language and integration courses, employment, language skills, social contact with Germans, feeling welcome, and subjective well-being. To address potential biases from omitted variables and endogeneity, we complement ordinary least-squares estimations with a formal assessment of unobserved factors and an instrumental variable approach, using local childcare coverage rates as the instrument. Results indicate that mothers increase their participation in integration and language classes as well as labor market engagement when their child attends childcare services. Additionally, childcare attendance is associated with mothers’ improved German skills and more frequent contact with German residents, confirming that childcare centers can foster bridging ties. We find no effect on maternal well-being. Although our selected outcomes cannot capture the full range of Ukrainian refugee mothers’ experiences in Germany, the outcomes extend beyond traditional labor market indicators, underscoring the broader integrative function of childcare services." Abstract
"This article examines the impact of fixed-term employment on subjective well-being among natives, migrants and refugees in Germany and the underlying mechanisms of this relationship. Utilizing longitudinal data from 2016 to 2021, we employ fixed-effects panel models and mediation analyses. We find that refugees experience stronger negative effects of fixed-term employment on their well-being than natives and migrants, especially shortly after their arrival. For migrants and natives, subjective job insecurity significantly mediates these effects, while it is less relevant for refugees. Our results indicate that it is essential to acknowledge the heterogeneous effects for vulnerable groups when studying the impact of fixed-term employment. During their integration process, refugees encounter complex labour market challenges which can pose threats to their subjective well-being. Therefore, we suggest engaging more in debates about non-standard forms of employment and taking aspects of the quality of employment into account when designing integration measures for this group." Abstract
"This paper analyzes the role of health for refugees’ integration into host countries’ labor markets. We exploit the quasi-random dispersal policies of refugees across regions in Germany to analyze the causal effect of health on employment. Based on regional and temporal heterogeneity in a policy adoption that provided earlier access to healthcare services through electronic health cards (eHCs), combined with the regional availability of healthcare services and pre-migration health status, we construct instrumental variables (IVs) providing plausibly exogenous variation in refugees’ post-arrival health status. Our results reveal that favorable physical health (PCS) improves refugees’ employment probability. Favorable mental health (MCS) increases only females’ employment rates, although this effect must be scrutinized due to weak instruments. Regarding potential mechanisms, we provide evidence that better health increases language course participation and German language proficiency for female refugees." Abstract
"More than a decade ago, refugee immigration prominently returned to Europe’s political agendas, sparking interest in the factors shaping refugees’ economic and societal participation. Adopting a life course perspective, this study addresses the conflicting views in sociology of migration on the importance of pre-migration capital for refugees’ post-migration trajectories. While some argue that human capital is accumulated over the life course and retains its value after migration, others describe forced migration as a disruptive event that may severely diminish these resources. Drawing on rich survey and administrative employment data, this article employs sequence analysis combined with cluster analysis to identify typical integration trajectories of refugee women and men in Germany. In multivariate analyses, I demonstrate that pre-migration human capital is associated with a higher likelihood to enter education and employment, underscoring the enduring relevance of resources acquired prior to migration. Straining journeys can, however, reduce available resources after arrival: for individuals reporting long and traumatizing journeys, human capital effects partly disappear. The results highlight the important role of refugee migration experiences that are often neglected in both scholarly and political discourses on integration outcomes as well as migration and integration policies." Abstract
"This article examines origin- and gender-based disparities in labour-market integration of refugees in Germany, comparing Ukrainian refugees with refugees from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Using longitudinal data from the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Refugee Survey and the IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP Ukrainian Refugee Survey, we trace labour-force participation (LFP) and employment rates during the first three years after arrival. Our findings confirm the expected origin and gender gaps. Ukrainians outperform MENA refugees, and men outperform women in both LFP and employment rates. However, decomposition analyses reveal that these gaps are driven less by differences in pre-migration human capital, post-migration investments, caregiving responsibilities, or legal conditions as endowments. Instead, disparities in LFP are largely explained by differential returns to similar characteristics, particularly duration of stay and, for women, returns to language skills and not having children. Once selection into the labour force is accounted for, most employment gaps are reversed or disappear, indicating that early inequalities primarily arise from differential entry into LFP rather than unequal employment chances among participants. Overall, the findings highlight labour-force selection and unequal returns – rather than resource deficits – as central mechanisms shaping early refugee labour-market integration." Abstract
Abstract

Abstract
"This paper studies how local threat shapes refugees’ cultural assimilation and economic integration, exploiting plausibly exogenous variation in their allocation across German regions between 2013 and 2016. Using representative survey data and administrative records, we measure cultural preferences alongside employment, earnings, and job characteristics, and build a threat index combining contemporaneous and historical local xenophobia. Refugees assigned to more hostile regions converge more rapidly to Germans’ stated preferences, yet do not find jobs faster and experience slower earnings growth. We show that local hostility heightens threat perceptions, prompting quicker cultural adoption, while higher discrimination slows refugees’ successful economic integration." Abstract
"This study investigates whether military conflict intensities in refugees’ home regions continue to shape their lives after arrival in a safe haven. While war and local conflict are well-established drivers of initial displacement, it remains unclear whether ongoing conflict influences settlement decision once refugees have escaped the immediate threat. We address this question using longitudinal data from the IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Ukrainian refugees in Germany, linked to high-frequency conflict data from Ukraine following the 2022 Russian invasion. Our findings show that both short- and long-term conflict intensities significantly affect refugees’ intentions to settle permanently abroad, with short-term shocks exerting a markedly stronger influence. Emotional responses to acute violence appear to disrupt more deliberative planning, consistent with ecological models of refugee distress. In contrast, long-term conflict intensity effects are weaker and diminish with time spent in the host country, suggesting processes of adaptation or habituation. We also find important heterogeneity: male refugees and those migrating for economic or family reasons are particularly sensitive to conflict dynamics, whereas those with family left behind are generally less inclined to settle permanently. Contrary to expectations, prior war exposure does not moderate current settlement intentions, pointing to possible acclimatization or avoidance strategies among highly exposed individuals. Overall, our results highlight the importance of integrating both emotional and evaluative processes into sociological models of refugee decision-making. They also highlight how even after arrival in safety, evolving home-country violence continues to shape refugees’ settlement trajectories." Abstract
"Despite extensive research on the integration paradox, its behavioral consequences remain largely unexamined. Although integration is expected to foster long-term settlement, structurally integrated migrants often report heightened discrimination. We argue that these experiences increase aspirations to leave, but their translation into migration plans depends on migrants’ capabilities. Building on an aspirations–capabilities framework, we conceptualize education as a key determinant of migration capabilities distinguishing between absolute and relative education. Absolute education captures skill transferability across destinations, whereas relative education reflects migrants’ position within the origin-country distribution and associated status expectations. We further argue that return and onward migration follow distinct evaluative logics: return is shaped by relative status considerations vis-à-vis the origin country, while onward migration reflects perceived skill transferability in alternative destinations. Using data from the International Mobility Panel of Migrants (IMPa), a large-scale survey of immigrants in Germany (N=41,600), we show migrants with higher absolute education are more likely to respond to alienation by planning onward migration. Contrary to our expectations, higher relative education is also associated with increased onward migration, while those with lower relative education are more likely to consider return." Abstract
Education and the Recalibration of Pull Factors: Ukrainian Exceptionalism in Forced Migration? (2026)

Abstract
"This article explores the migration and settlement decisions of Ukrainian refugees in Germany following the 2022 Russian invasion. Applying Everett Lee’s push–pull theory, it focuses on parents (reflecting the predominance of women travelling with children)—the largest displaced group—and investigates whether access to children’s education emerges not only as a domain of integration but asa significant pull factor within a broader constellation of drivers shaping settlement intentions. The analysis draws on original survey data collected in late 2024 (n = 1075), using an SMS-recruited online questionnaire administered across several host countries. Findings indicate that while war-related threats (e.g. bombardments, destruction of housing) were the primary push factors prompting departure from Ukraine, the decision to settle in Germany was strongly influenced by pull factors such as safety, social support, and access to schooling. Respondents in Germany were more likely to cite long-term motives—such as improved living standards and educational prospects—than those in neighbouring countries. Education emerges not only as a sphere of integration but also as a as part of an institutional bundle, especially for parents of minors. Dual-schooling models (local and Ukrainian), parental assessments of system quality, and children’s adaptation shaped settlement choices. These dynamics show the role of education in refugee agency and family strategy. The article argues that Ukrainian migration to Germany illustrates the interplay between structural pressures and personal decision-making. Push factors triggered large-scale displacement; pull factors and individual evaluations shaped longer-term trajectories. These findings contribute to migration theory by demonstrating the centrality of education in forced migration contexts and by highlighting the heterogeneity of refugee profiles within a single national cohort." Abstract
"This study is the first to examine the 2016 reform of Germany’s Residence Act that intended to foster refugee integration by extending the waiting period for permanent residency from 3 to 5 years and introducing requirements, such as proficiency in German and partial financial independence. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), we employ a difference-in-differences design to analyse employment and full-time employment trends among refugees. Results show that the reform did not accelerate take-up rates of either overall or full-time employment. However, administrative data from the German Central Register of Foreign Nationals reveals that after the reform, permanent residency acquisition rates significantly declined. The findings call into question the efficacy of conditional residency policies in fostering labour market integration." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Abstract
"Regarding refugees’ social protection studies in social policy and migration, research emphasises the importance of different local framework conditions as well as individual strategies of refugees. While the debates in these disciplines have so far been largely separate, this article sheds light on the interplay between strategies and local framework conditions in the context of flight. Based on qualitative interviews with refugees and local actors in twelve municipalities in Germany, we illustrate the practices of refugees in accessing and utilising social rights and services against the backdrop of fragmented local worlds. The municipalities analysed differ in terms of local policies, migration-related narratives and space. Firstly, we show that refugees pursue diverse strategies of access and participation in education, healthcare and the labour market, which are initially independent of municipal framework conditions. Secondly, we illustrate the extent to which these strategies are associated with different consequences for access to and utilisation of educational, healthcare and employment opportunities for refugees depending on local conditions. Based on our findings, we argue that social protection of refugees must be understood as an interplay between local conditions and individual practices." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Abstract
"The paper is structured around three main contributions. First, it takes advantage of a unique survey on Afghan asylum seekers in Germany to provide novel descriptive insights into asylum seekers’ beliefs about their outcomes and the associated intention to overstay. Second, it estimates asylum seekers’ perceived ex ante returns on overstaying and option values of regularisation, deportation, and experimentation. Third, it assesses and rejects the cost-effectiveness argument for assisted voluntary return policies. Instead, it estimates a sizeable willingness-to-pay of asylum seekers for investments that would guarantee their regularisation." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Abstract
"During and after World War II, West Germany absorbed around eight million refugees and displaced persons, including nearly two million children. This provides a natural experiment to examine whether birthplace characteristics exert persistent effects on later labor-market outcomes. Using administrative labor-market biographies for the 1935-1950 birth cohorts combined with geocoded information on birthplaces and workplaces, we find that birthplace urbanicity is strongly associated with later labor-market outcomes not only among both native-born individuals but also among expellees. Individuals originating from urban regions earn systematically higher daily wages than those born in rural areas, even after controlling for workplace region, education, and occupation. Among displaced individuals, the effects are considerably stronger for women than for men and are especially pronounced for expellees from the Czech lands. The findings suggest that urban-origin advantages were transmitted across generations through education, occupational sorting, and family-specific social and cultural capital." Abstract
"Drawing upon social network analysis and longitudinal research with recently resettled Afghans in London, this article advances understanding of social capital in navigating upward mobility and rebuilding professional identities. Forced migration may result in the sudden rupturing of social ties (‘torn nets’) and loss of status which may undermine one’s sense of self. Even the most experienced and highly qualified professionals may face deskilling – ‘starting from zero’. While acknowledging structural barriers, and racialised discrimination, it is important to understand refugees’ strategies to rebuild careers. Building upon the ‘presentation of the networked self’, we explore the role of relationality in how professional identity is reclaimed. Social networks can be useful routes to jobs. However, we argue that the extent to which social connections may help with reclaiming one’s former career depends, partly, on forging ‘vertical ties’ with those who are willing and able to recognize and legitimate that professional status." Abstract
"Highly skilled refugees are often assumed to possess forms of social and human capital that facilitate labour market integration in host societies. However, forced displacement disrupts not only professional trajectories but also the institutional and social infrastructures through which skills, qualifications, and professional identities are recognised and converted into employment. This article develops the concept of connectivity without convertibility to explain how digitally mediated social ties among highly skilled Syrian refugees in Germany remain socially active and emotionally meaningful while failing to generate institutional recognition or stable professional mobility. Drawing on 24 qualitative interviews, participant observation, and digital ethnography conducted between 2022 and 2024, the study examines how Syrian professionals use Facebook and WhatsApp groups to reconstruct professional networks, access information, and maintain occupational identity after displacement. The findings show that digital platforms provide emotional support, visibility, and symbolic forms of professional continuity, yet these forms of connectivity remain institutionally non-convertible. Rather than facilitating labour market integration, digital networking often reproduces prolonged waiting, downward mobility, and professional precarity. The article argues that connectivity without convertibility represents a broader structural condition of forced migration in which refugees remain digitally connected but excluded from the institutional mechanisms required for professional recognition and career restoration. Digital platforms therefore function less as pathways to integration than as fragile infrastructures of survival that sustain hope, identity, and social participation under conditions of structural exclusion." Abstract
(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

Abstract
"The inclusion of refugees in vocational education and training (VET) is considered crucial for enabling their participation in economic and social life. However, existing research demonstrates that access to and opportunities for VET participation are heavily dependent on residence status, primarily due to Germany’s stratified asylum and residence laws. Recently, a meritocratic logic has increasingly permeated the German asylum system, linking refugees’ chances of securing residence directly to engagement in employment or VET. From a theoretical perspective, refugees navigate a complex multi-level system where integration is determined by local, national, and supranational rules and practices. This article examines these interfaces, exploring how the integration of young refugees in VET can be achieved successfully at the local level, despite their poor long-term residency prospects from a national policy perspective. The paper presents findings derived from interviews with institutional experts and problem-centred interviews with trainees who have lived experience of forced migration, utilising a grounded theory methodology. The results reveal that refugees actively employ VET to improve their prospects of staying in the country. Nevertheless, they confront numerous legal, structural, social, and informational barriers in accessing and completing VET. The study concludes that institutional support from training companies and local networks is indispensable to overcome these obstacles. Overall, the findings underline the critical importance of institutional and local contexts for the successful integration of refugees." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Abstract
"Educational aspirations and expectations are important indicators of individuals’ educational and occupational trajectories. While existing research highlights the role of social background and migration-related factors, less is known about how these processes operate among refugees and the extent to which refugee-specific conditions matter. This study contributes to closing these gaps by drawing on data from the ReGES study (N = 2300), which surveyed refugee adolescents who arrived in Germany between 2014 and 2018. The findings showed that a substantial share of refugee adolescents reported high, academic aspirations and expectations. Several refugee-specific conditions, particularly insecure residence status, limited German language proficiency, attendance in newcomer classes and age-inappropriate school placement, were negatively associated with both outcomes, whereas risk of posttraumatic stress disorder showed no significant association. Contrary to theoretical expectations, these factors were not consistently more strongly related to educational expectations than to aspirations. Most associations were attenuated once parental educational aspirations, pre-migration social status, and migration-related mechanisms were considered. Parental aspirations emerged as the strongest positive predictor. Overall, the study highlights the importance of refugee-specific conditions within a broader framework of social inequality and migration research and discusses their implications for educational practice and future research." Abstract
"For young refugees of school age, the acquisition of language skills in the main language of the host country is linked to their educational integration. Opportunities to learn the destination language are structured by legislative and regulatory frameworks established in the host country, especially in the domains of education and asylum policy. In our study we investigate the German case and test if (1) shorter waiting times of school enrolment, (2) integration into regular classes instead of separate refugee classes, and (3) a secure residence status are positively correlated with second language skills of young refugees. Empirically, we use data of the first survey wave of the ReGES study (Refugees in the German Educational System) which surveys adolescent refugees aged 14–16. We apply cross-sectional analyses for four federal states (Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony). We restrict the sample to youths who currently attend regular classes. The analysis comprises N = 1097 students. Our findings reveal that prolonged waiting times for school enrollment and insecure residence status are significantly associated with fewer destination language skills. Furthermore, young refugees who attended preparatory classes earlier remain to have lower German language proficiency in regular classes compared to those who did never. Remaining significant differences between federal states indicate that more educational legislation than the ones regarded could contribute to additional differences in destination language skills." Abstract
"This open access edited volume brings together original perspectives on the important topic of educational integration of refugees and newly arrived immigrants and discusses implications for policymakers and practitioners. It highlights that, despite significant migration movements in recent years, the body of research addressing school integration processes and the role of regulations and laws remains limited. These factors are considered important for early adaptation, long-term acculturation, and the overall integration of newly arrived immigrants. The volume brings together qualitative and quantitative studies on educational participation in primary and secondary education as well as in vocational education and training. It also examines the challenges involved in acquiring second-language proficiency and achieving success across a range of school subjects. It explores the institutional conditions for the educational integration of refugees and newly arrived immigrants (particularly access to education, academic achievement, and attainment) across different host countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Sweden. It offers valuable insights and discusses potential implications for researchers studying educational opportunities of immigrant youth, as well as for policymakers and policy advisors." (2026): Kohortenbasierte Verbleibsanalyse syrischer Staatsangehöriger. (Grundlagen: Methodenbericht / Bundesagentur für Arbeit), Nürnberg, 48 S.
Abstract
(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

Abstract
"Refugees enrolling in host country higher education can improve their position in the labour market. However, little is known about the patterns underlying enrolment, and existing studies have only examined explanations at the individual level. This is problematic because opportunities to enrol in education are also dependent upon structural factors, and by ignoring this, studies run the risk of depicting non-enrolment as a consequence of individual shortcomings. We address this issue through the notion of arrival infrastructures and argue that existing infrastructures at multiple spatial scales may support or discourage enrolment. By focusing on the Netherlands, we were able to follow the enrolment of all registered refugees that arrived between 2014 and 2017 over time using registry data. We find that the accessibility of education, the municipal political climate and regional economic conditions influence educational enrolment. These findings show that dispersal policies can have detrimental effects on the social mobility of refugees." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Abstract
"SUMMARY: Germany has become the second-most important destination for migrants worldwide. Using all waves from the microcensus, we study their labur market integration over the last 50 years and highlight differences to the US case. Although the employment gaps between immigrant and native men decline after arrival, they remain large for most cohorts; the average gap after one decade is 10 percentage points. Conversely, income gaps tend to widen post-arrival. Compositional differences explain how those gaps vary across groups, and why they worsened over time; after accounting for composition, integration outcomes show no systematic trend. Still, economic conditions do matter, and employment collapsed in some cohorts after structural shocks hit the German labor market in the early 1990s. Lastly, we examine the integration of recent arrivals during the European refugee ‘crisis’ and the Russo-Ukrainian war." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Abstract
"This study explores the multifaceted experiences of refugees in Hamburg, Germany, with a focus on how various forms of othering - social, cultural, linguistic, and digital - affect their integration. Through qualitative interviews with 62 refugees, the findings reveal that language acquisition, while often regarded as essential for integration, does not shield refugees from exclusion. Othering extends beyond linguistic differences, intersecting with gender, race, and religious identity, further complicating integration efforts, particularly for women. Additionally, the study identifies digital exclusion as another form of othering, termed “digital othering,” which restricts refugees’ access to social and economic participation while adversely affecting their psychological well-being and identity formation. Despite these challenges, refugees exhibit significant self-agency in navigating social and digital barriers. The findings underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to integration that transcends language proficiency and economic participation, addressing both social and digital forms of othering. This study calls for policies promoting equitable digital access, transforming digital spaces into platforms for empowerment, and fostering a more inclusive society. Drawing on social identity theory and the concept of othering, the research shows how societal narratives and digital exclusion intersect to shape refugee integration, advocating for inclusive strategies to tackle systemic inequalities." Unveiling Disadvantages Faced by Refugee Professionals: A Review of Intersecting Challenges in Professional Reintegration (2025)

Botoon, Sanjar (2025): Unveiling Disadvantages Faced by Refugee Professionals: A Review of Intersecting Challenges in Professional Reintegration. In: Sociology Compass, Jg. 19, H. 4. DOI:10.1111/soc4.70061
Abstract
"Refugee professionals constitute a small but significant part of the growing refugee population worldwide. They are highly educated individuals motivated to resume their disrupted professions in host countries. However, they often remain unemployed, underemployed, or overqualified. This multidisciplinary review identifies three categories of disadvantages—ethno-racial discrimination, stigmatization of the “refugee identity,” and de-professionalizing integration support—as potential causes of refugee professionals' disadvantaged socioeconomic position and poor economic performance. Ethno-racial discrimination appears to be the most destructive, undermining professional aspirations and exacerbating identity and integration disadvantages. Identity disadvantages reduce professionals to just refugees, while integration disadvantages deprive them of the professional training, counseling, and orientation needed for successful reintegration. The review concludes that more structural constraints lead to a higher risk of marginalization and social exclusion for refugee professionals. It highlights the need for further research to inspire solution-oriented policy improvements." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Arbeitsmarktsituation von Geflüchteten in Niedersachsen (2025)

Abstract
Abstract
(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

Abstract
Abstract

In: Soziale Welt, Jg. 76, H. 1-2, S. 7-31. DOI:10.5771/0038-6073-2025-1-2-7
