Work in the digitized world

Working Group

Research task

The Working Group "Work in the Digitized World" deals above all with the effects of technological change on the area of employment, wages, occupations, tasks, qualifications, branches of industry, regions and labour market institutions, as well as on the organisation of working time and work processes.

Debates about the consequences of digitization and automatization (Industry 4.0, Economy 4.0) have increased markedly. On the one hand, fears are raised that jobs will increasingly be replaced by machines and computers. On the other hand, there might be large potentials for Germany: Representatives of the manufacturing trade see Industry 4.0 as an answer to the megatrends demography, globalisation and climate change. This is why the topic of qualified staff and also questions of sustainability are strongly linked to the current IAB focus on "Work in the Digitized World".

The aim of the Working Group is to promote the exchange of information within IAB as well as to the outside and to discuss research approaches, projects ideas and results in order to provide good policy advice. At the same time it is also important to establishnew data sources so that new projects can be initiated.
